Opening

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the customary 10 count in memory of those the boxing community has lost.  “Irish” Danny McAloon, a professional boxer from the Bronx who had 45 fights from 1966-81, died August 2 at age 74 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral information will be distributed.

Seventh Annual Ring 10 Awards Banquet

The 2017 event will be returning to Marina Del Rey in the Bronx and will be held on Sunday, September 24 from 11 am – 4pm.

Arrangements are being made to transport this year’s Steve Belloise Top Contender Award recipient, Joey Giambra, from Las Vegas.

Davey Moore Jr. will be coming to this year’s event. Rich Schwartz will attempt to get a commitment from Roy Jones and Danny Jacobs to join us. We would also like to invite and honor Ray Elson

We are considering using a charity fundraising organization for this year’s auction. Ring 10 would select desired items to be auctioned and keep 100% of the amount above the minimum bid. Shipping is paid by the fundraising organization whose fee is the minimum bid of the auction item.  We will select up to 30 items at the next meeting to be included in the auction.

Other News

Dr. Charles Bernick, Associate Medical Director at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, is interested in furthering his research of CTE and conducting brain trauma testing on boxers in Las Vegas.  These efforts will enable him to continue to build a body of samples and make progress in this field which could potentially help future generations of boxers.  Anyone interested in more information, please contact Matt.

Dr. Robert Polofsky shared his 20+ years of both pro and amateur ringside experience with the group. He provided an overview of concussions, brain injuries and the doctor’s responsibility to recognize any signs of such injuries so the fight can be stopped at the right time and the boxer given the proper medical attention as soon as possible. It was a spirited and passionate discussion. Thank you for your time, Dr. Polofsky!
