March 2017 Meeting
The general membership met at Rino’s Italian Restaurant on Tuesday night, March 21, 2017. There were a total of 18 members and guests, including Board Members Matt Farrago (President), Mike Bernard (Vice President), Johnny Zervos, Rich Schwartz, Ed Post, Tyrone Jackson and Sharon Scrima.
The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the customary 10 count in memory of those the boxing community has lost. Legendary boxing trainer and manager Lou Duva, who spent more than seven decades in the sport he loved, died on March 8 at the age of 94. A fiery and charismatic mainstay in the world of professional boxing, Duva handled the careers of 19 world champions, including Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor, along with Hector “Macho” Camacho and Arturo Gatti.
All-time great former WBC middleweight champion Rodrigo Valdez passed away on March 14 in Colombia, suffering from a fatal heart attack.
May they rest in peace!
Seventh Annual Ring 10 Awards Banquet
The 2017 event will be returning to Marina Del Rey in the Bronx and will be held on Sunday, September 24 from 11 am – 4pm.
We will soon begin to collect nominations for this year’s award honorees, including former middleweight boxer Joey Giambra who expressed interest in attending. Giambra faced and defeated most of the top contenders of his era during the 1950’s, only having had one world championship attempt in almost 80 career bouts.
Run With The Champs
The “Run with the Champs” fundraiser will be held on Sunday April 23, rain or shine, at the Villa Maria Academy. In addition to the hamburgers and hot dogs that have been donated by Jo Jo’s, 10 cases of water, bagels and cream cheese have been secured. Villa Maria will provide paper plates, napkins and cutlery. We will seek a sponsor to support purchase of other necessary items that have been identified. $200 will be charged for sponsorship of the event which will include a sign to be displayed and two free admission tickets. We will also look into renting a beer keg for the afternoon. Only $10 to ENTER. All Food, gifts, and Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event.
Members who have not yet done so are asked to bring items to next month’s meeting that can be raffled off in gift baskets (ideas include bottles of wine, spirits, non-perishables, etc.). A hearty thanks to those who have contributed.
We thank all members who have sold advanced tickets and kindly ask to keep spreading the word – posters were distributed to all members to be posted in prominent locations in the Bronx area.
A Jim Abbott biography and signed baseball was auctioned off at the meeting, with Ed Post making the winning bid. Enjoy it, Ed!
Monthly finances were shared with the members, including cases of recurring payments to those who continue to be in need of our assistance. We will be making a contribution to Bob Miller via the Bob Miller Fund, a longtime local boxing icon who is paralyzed from the chest down after a car accident last October. A check will be presented to him at the fundraiser being held on March 25 by Rich Schwartz on behalf of Ring 10.
Member Cliff Hotte shared a personal case that illustrates the effectiveness of Disability Justice, an organization that helps individuals obtain Social Security disability benefits. This is an encouraging sign that they can help any individuals who are currently dealing with a qualifying issue.
Matt paid a visit to former light heavyweight boxer Ray Elson who is suffering from severe CTE in a facility located in Hauppauge. Such visits are another way Ring 10 shows support of forgotten fighters in need.
In light of Passover next month, our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 18. The Board will meet at 6:00 pm to finalize business details for the Run with the Champs event.
