Seventh Annual Ring 10 Awards Banquet

The 2017 event will be returning to Marina Del Rey in the Bronx and will be held on Sunday, September 24 from 11 am – 4pm.

We will be forming committees to delegate more responsibility among the membership.  Virginia Hotte will be in charge of the journal ad process, Matt will continue to be responsible for tickets and volunteers are welcome to work at the event in exchange for no ticket charge.

Run With The Champs

The “Run With The Champs” fundraiser will be held on Sunday April 30, rain or shine, at the Villa Maria Academy. Hamburgers and hot dogs have been donated by Jo Jo’s and all members are asked to bring items to next month’s meeting that can be raffled off in gift baskets at the event (ideas include bottles of wine, spirits, non-perishables, etc.). At next month’s meeting, we will also be asking members to volunteer to bring anything that can be sold or served at the event (ie; cases of water, soda, ice, napkins, plates, forks, etc.). Members are encouraged to reach out to sponsors for such items. We plan to distribute printed tickets for advance sales at $10/ticket.

A complimentary full-page Ring 10 ad was published in this year’s Briscoe Awards journal.  We thank the organizers for their thoughtfulness.

The “Meet & Greet” with Joe Smith held at the Hamlet earlier this month was a big success with Ring 10 raising over $900 in merchandise sales and donations. A hearty congratulations to Joe on his big KO win over the legendary Bernard Hopkins on December 17.

Members have asked to receive regular monthly updates at each meeting on who Ring 10 is helping, how much, how frequently and for what purpose.  There is a need to evaluate the circumstances of each case to most effectively manage our funds and ensure we are able to help as many boxers in need as possible.  Matt will share this information each month.

We graciously thank those who have been making regular monthly donations to Ring 10, including Brian Daley and William Scrima.

In light of Valentine’s Day next month, our next meeting will be moved from Tuesday, Feb 14 to Thursday, Feb 16.

We are collecting membership dues for 2017. Kindly submit annual dues of $25 at the next meeting if you have not already renewed your membership!

John told us about his boxing background and devastating punching power, scoring a first round KO against all 16 of his opponents. We enjoyed meeting him and learning about his life story. We continue to support Howard Davis Jr. each month as he continues treatment in Florida. He confirms his attendance at our fundraiser in September as long as he is feeling well enough for the trip.

Through our contact with the widow of former fighter Tony Ayala, we have identified an opportunity for Bert Cooper to run a gym on her ranch in San Antonio, Texas. Ring 10 is proud to announce we have flown Bert to Texas and he has already started training fighters at Tony’s gym. He is living in a furnished two bedroom apartment and gets a steady salary. We have been in constant contact and he is adjusting nicely.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to one of our Board Members, Edward Gersh. Mr. Gersh passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 15th. His dedication and commitment has been an integral part of our success and growth. He was also our first SALDA recipient and a dear friend to many of us. He will remain an honorary Board member of Ring 10 and be remembered forever. Be sure to pick up a copy of “Tomato Can”, a compellingly comedic and entertaining novel written by Ron
Ross that was released in 1994.

Judicial intervention has stalled the $760 million NFL Concussion lawsuit settlement that was reached with the NFLPA last summer. This case has shined a much needed light on the very serious matter of head trauma in contact sports. Unfortunately, no union exists in boxing that would help represent the countless number of fighters who suffer from these injuries, nor is there a central governing body against which such claims can be raised. Ring 10 has reached out to former NFL TE Brent Jones who formed a venture capital company, Northgate Capital (as featured on an episode of HBO’s ‘Real Sports’), in hopes that he can propose some funding ideas to support unionization efforts.

June 2014 Meeting
The general membership met at Rino’s Italian Restaurant on Tuesday night, June 10, 2014. There were a total of 21 members and guests, including Board Members Matt Farrago (President), Mike Bernard (Vice President), Rich Schwartz, Sharon Scrima, Ed Post and Harold Lederman. Prominent guests included former champion Iran Barkley, middleweight contender Dennis Milton and referee Joe Santarpia.
———————————————————————-
Opening
The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the customary 10 count in memory of those the boxing community has lost. Matthew Saad Muhammad, a former light heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer known for his bruising, gritty warrior style, passed away on May 25. Having suffered from CTE related symptoms, the several battering rounds this courageous fighter endured throughout his career may have attributed to his death. Found sleeping in the streets of Philadelphia abandoned as a child, he was named Matthew Franklin after the parkway near which he was found and was raised in foster homes. Sadly, he became homeless again years after his glorious boxing career ended and lived in a city shelter. Among the hundreds in attendance at his funeral were fellow Philly fighters, including Tim Witherspoon, Mike Rossman,
Eugene Hart, Earl Hargrove, Kevin Howard and Tyrone Crawley.

His 1980 rematch with Yaqui Lopez earned Ring Magazine Fight of the Year honors and demonstrates the heart and determination of this fearless warrior. Instead of falling to Lopez’s eighth-round onslaught, Saad Muhammad rallied. The champion willed himself to knock down Lopez four times in the 14th round to defend the World Boxing Council’s light-heavyweight title. Check out the incredible Round 8 action below:

May he rest in peace…..

Run with the Champs Walk/Jog-a-thon
A wonderful time was had by all at our first annual “Run with the Champs” fundraiser this past Sunday, June 1 at Villa Maria Academy. Recognizing this was our first event, there is room to improve upon all aspects to increase overall attendance, participation and profits for next year. An overview of receivables and payables was shared with the group and an itemized breakdown is available to anyone interested in more detailed information.

It was truly a group effort with everyone contributing to make the event a success. Special thanks goes to Nancy and the entire Farrago family for all of the planning and social media promotion, Mike Bernard for organizing and securing the Villa, John Zervos and Harold Lederman for their grill master services, Carol and Debra for working the front gate, Mike Toroli for obtaining sponsorship and donation of food, Sharon and
Rich Scrima for raising $940 in pledges, Chrystine Canino for arranging the emcee, Stefani Belloise and Cliff & Virginia Hotte for bringing the crowd and volunteering during the event. Last but not least thanks to all of the fighters who participated – Iran Barkley, Mark Breland, Dennis Milton, Rob Garris, Doug Dewitt, Aaron Davis, Tyrone Jackson, Junior Jones and Larry Barnes.

The entertaining and engaging DJ also helped make the day quite enjoyable. We will consider incorporating him into our September fundraiser in a suitable way.

Formal certificates of appreciation will be produced and sent to sponsors, service providers and others who provided exceptional support to help make our event a success.

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the customary 10 count in memory of those the boxing community has lost. Rubin “Hurricane” Carter lost his battle to prostate cancer on April 20. Former heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis died on May 6 of complications from dementia. Ellis took the hard road to the championship, having fought many of the great heavyweights in Ali, Frazier, Shavers, Patterson and Lyle, just to name a few. 39-year old Long Island boxer Jacques Louis (aka The Haitian Warrior) was tragically killed in a car accident on the Southern State Parkway on April 18. He had a 3-1 professional record and fought at the Paramount in Huntington, the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square and at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach.

Pledge money from sponsors has already started to come in for our first annual “Run with the Champs” fundraiser on Sunday, June 1 at Villa Maria Academy starting at 10 am. All members are encouraged to continue their efforts to gain additional sponsors. A rain date of June 22 has been established.

Former Ring 10 Board Member Richard Thornblad died at around 6AM on April 14, 2014 at age 62 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, New York. He was hospitalized for an intestinal blockage about a week ago but the cause of death was an infection which shot through his system and couldn’t be contained by antibiotics. Richard is survived by his wife Joanie and two daughters.Just before his death, Richard was visited by his closest friends, all of whom were members of Ring 10, Mike Bernard, John Zervos, John Marano, Vinnie Serratore and Mike Trapani. We all loved Richard, a gregarious fun loving person, who loved boxing and the people in it, for his entire life.He will especially be missed by those who knew him for the dinners he always would arrange for his Ring 10 friends. Good Bye Richard. We will miss you and always love you. Rest in Peace. You will never be forgotten.

Joe Noble donated several vintage boxing programs and printed materials to be preserved by Ring 10. As no such archive currently exists, the establishment of some form of system was discussed and will require further consideration.

Other News

Ring 10 has now been in existence for three years. Read all of the heartfelt testimonials of gratitude on the Ring 10 homepage from those we have helped during this time, like this one from Mark McPherson:

“Ring 10 has been instrumental in my recovery from surgery! When I thought there was nowhere to go, they were there with aid for me and my family. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT COMPASSION. I’m thankful for Matt Farrago, a potential opponent in yesteryear – a greater ally today, as the founder of Ring 10. There is still great compassion in this world.”

Mark Breland recently visited Wilfred Benitez in Puerto Rico who is in need of both physical and cognitive therapy to develop his muscles while he continues to battle serious health issues. Both Ring 10 and the Mark Breland Foundation continue to look for ways to provide support to this suffering former champion. The Foundation is also supporting fighters to obtain PET scans that will provide more meaningful information regarding brain function and extent of damage.

Ring 1 is holding a Hall of Fame banquet on May 18 in Philadelphia entitled “United We Stand”. Tickets are $60. Contact Matt if you are interested in attending and group travel arrangements can be made.

February 2014 Board Meeting
The Board of Directors met at Rino’s Italian Restaurant on Tuesday night, February 11, 2014 in advance of the general membership meeting. In attendance were Matt Farrago
(President), Mike Bernard (Vice President), Rich Schwartz, Sharon Scrima, John Zervos and Harold Lederman.

We sold approximately $1,300 in merchandise at the “Irish” Wayne Kelly event on February 1. Unfortunately, the event was not profitable so no additional funds will be incoming.

In an attempt to further expand our Board with a mixture of various boxing figures, it was proposed that Mark Breland and Richard Burton be appointed to the Ring 10 Board of Directors. Members of the Board unanimously voted in support of this proposal.

Mike Bernard confirmed plans for the first annual “Run with the Champs” on June 1 at Villa Maria Academy. Pledge sheets and information will be shared with members.

Ring 10 was offered to set up a booth in Las Vegas at a future Floyd Mayweather fight in September 2014 for $1,000. Upon review, the Board determined that this would not be a cost-efficient option for us at this time.

The meeting concluded upon commencement of the general meeting at 7 pm.
